A New Approach to Using Geographic Information Provides the Key to Effective Incident Mapping

Increasingly, public safety agencies are looking to use spatial analysis to enhance operational effectiveness and measure performance. Both computer-aided dispatch solutions, such as Intergraph's I/CAD suite, and records management systems, such as Intergraph's I/LEADS or third-party offerings such as Niche RMS, facilitate the collection of valuable operational data. The vast majority of this data is spatially referenced with accurate location information recorded for each incident. With the introduction of Intergraph's I/Incident Analyst, public safety agencies have a new opportunity to make use of the geographic information routinely captured in their CAD and RMS databases.

Intergraph recognizes the need to provide both a focused spatial analysis toolset designed specifically for incident analysis, and an associated training program that gives public safety agencies the opportunity to make better use of GIS within their agency. I/Incident Analyst is specifically designed to provide a suite of tools that sits within the GeoMedia® GIS platform and connects to Intergraph's I/CAD and I/LEADS solutions, or any third-party CAD or RMS solution. These tools bring the power of GIS to the surface, giving the public safety analyst easy access to analysis routines specific to their business.

In addition to providing tools to create simple pin maps or counts by area, I/Incident Analyst allows users to easily create hotspot or density maps using predefined parameters. More experienced analysts are able to maintain more control of the settings through the advanced interface. Analysts can also easily examine the spatial relationship between two locations: the distance between an offender and his crimes, for example; or the distance between the location of a stolen vehicle and where it is recovered. When you add I/Incident Analyst's ability to examine temporal as well as spatial patterns in CAD and RMS data, this becomes an essential component of the analyst's toolkit.

Within a short period of time, analysts with little GIS knowledge will be creating compelling analytical products that will assist decision makers in deploying resources more effectively to deal with identified problems.
